What Is NSFAS N Rule?
The NSFAS N+ Rule is a pivotal rule instituted by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme to add additional years of funding to students who may not complete their qualifications for the registered years expected.
For example, students are expected to finish their bachelor’s degree for four academic years. However, a student may fail his modules, or take a gap year, or cannot finish the degree as expected for whatever reason.
In such cases, NSFAS will have to apply the NSFAS N+ Rule to continue to fund students who may need additional years to complete their qualifications.
What Are The Types of NSFAS N Rule?
Currently, NSFAS operates the NSFAS N+ Rule in two forms. The NSFAS N+1 Rule and the NSFAS N+2 Rule. Both rules are not the same and they are applied in different situations.
So, let’s go straight into knowing how the NSFAS rules of N+ are applied and the students who qualify for each of the rules.
What Is NSFAS N+1 Rule?
The NSFAS+1 Rule is applied when a student has only N+1 years to complete his or her qualification.
In the rule, the “N” means the minimum number of years a student is registered to complete a qualification whiles the “+1” means the extra one-year NSFAS has to fund the student for not completing the qualification for the expected years.
For example, the minimum number of years to finish a bachelor’s degree is four (4) years. So in the NSFAS N Rule, the N for bachelor’s degree student will mean the student is expected to complete his or her higher education qualification in four years.
The +1 in the NSFAS+1 Rule means NSFAS will have to fund the student an additional one year because the student couldn’t finish his or her qualification as expected.

What Is NSFAS N+2 Rule?
In the NSFAS N Rule, the N+2 Rule means a student needs N+2 years to complete his or her degree qualification.
The “N” means the number of years the student is registered to finish the qualification whiles the “+2” means the extra two years NSFAS has to fund the student for not completing the qualification for the expected years.
For example, a student reading a bachelor’s degree is expected to complete the qualification in four (4) academic years and NSFAS per the loan agreement is going to fund the student for four years.
However, in case the student could not finish the qualification in four years, then NSFAS will invoke the NSFAS N+ Rule which is the NSFAS N+ 2 Rules in this case
NSFAS fund students based on the duration of course or degree the student is registerd to study according to the loan agreement. The NSFAS N+ Rule is to add extra years in case a student fail a year.

When Do You Need NSFAS N+1 Rule?
In the NSFAS N+ Rules, a student will need the NSFAS N+1 Rule in case he needs an extra one year to complete the qualification because he failed one year.

How Does NSFAS N+ Rule Work?

Does NSFAS Fund N 1 Students?

NSFAS considers the first year you registered at an institution and not when you started receiving funding when they’re applying the N+ rules.

When you change course, NSFAS will still fund you. In your case, you have already been funded for 2 years and so, you’re left with 3 years of funding including the N+ rules to make your total funding 5 years.
This means, you’ll have to fund yourself for the last year when you change to do the 4-year program.
I still don’t understand this. When applying the N+2 rule to a four year degree, you get 6 years but in your replies I keep coming across the 5 years as a maximum. This is so confusing because I started in 2017 and I did not take a gap year or anything, I kept failing but this year I am supposed to be doing my final year. I think it will be better if you can check your application status to know the current progress of your funding.
Also, you should understand that NSFAS N+1 rule applies and affects first-time entering students who first registered into a university or TVET college after December 2017.
This means the National Student Financial Aid Scheme will only affect the NSFAS N+1 rule on students who registered in 2017.
Again, this explains that students who registered in January 2018 are not affected by the NSFAS N+1 Rule instead, NSFAS will use the N+2 rule on all students who registered in 2018 onwards.

Yes, you can get funded if you appeal. However, you can appeal through the appeal tab in your MyNSFAS account.

We assume that the appeal button is not showing in your mynsfas account because you’ve exceeded the n+ rules, and NSFAS does not want you to appeal. However, you can try to appeal by email. We are not for sure this will work out but just try it through applicationreview@nsfas.org.za

First, when NSFAS is applying the n+ rule, they include the year you first registered at an institution. In your case 2018 and not when you started receiving funding which is 2019 in your case.
Second, he still qualifies for NSFAS for 2022 since it will be his last year of funding with the N+2 rule. which makes the reason for his rejection incorrect.
Again, he should select the one close to the reason for rejection and provide the letter from his institution to support why he chose that option as well as a motivational letter. University students were advised to use the 60 or fewer credits reason. Obtained this information from an NSFAS agent.

I would like to bring to your kind and respectable notice that my 2022 application was rejected with reason that I exceeded the N+ rule. I registered my first year at UJ for Bed funded by funza lushaka in 2015 and 2016 used my own funding. I was not studying the rest of the years but in 2019 registered for llb extended program for 5 years. I was funded until 2021 and 2022 states the above. How will my funding status be after appeal according to the rules since I still have next year to complete in record time.
The question of whether your appeal will be approved is based on the reasons you give in your appeal and how strong your claims are. In fact, only NSFAS has the power to approve or decline your appeal.
Again, when NSFAS is applying any of the N+ rules, they consider your qualification years from the year you first registered, in your case 2015, and not when you first got approved for NSFAS funding of which is 2019 in your case.

You can appeal and support your appeal with your registration records. but you should know that, when NSFAS is applying the N+ rules, they consider the first year you registered at an institution, in your case at UNISA even if you did not receive funding from them.

You still qualify for funding for 2022 but you’ll lose your qualification for funding if you do not complete your qualification this year. NSFAS can fund a student for a maximum of 5 years.

I would like some help and clarity in my situation please. I first started studying at UP in 2017 but got excluded so in 2018 I went to Unisa for a semester, then made my way back to UP in 2019. All these years, I wasn’t funded by NSFAS. Then in 2020, I was successfully funded up until the end of April, then they revoked and cancelled my funding out of the blue at the end of April. Then I applied for 2021 and got successfully funded for the first time by NSFAS last year. Now my continuation status says that it’s unsuccessful because I exceed the N+ rule, yet my degree is a 5 year degree and I have only been funded for one year with NSFAS, let alone that this year is only the 5th year of my studies currently. How come and why?

I did two short courses in 2017 and another two in 2018, which were paid by my employers. I applied to study towards a diploma in 2019 and began my studies in 2020. I applied to nsfas in my second year of study and was successful and they funded me for the year of 2021. Now I’m in my final year in 2022 which mean that this will be my second year of Nsfas funding. Will the short courses of 2017 and 2018 effect my funding criteria or am I still eligible for funding?

NSFAS can fund a student per 1 qualification at a time. If you’re doing a degree, you can apply for the funding. However, if you were receiving NSFAS funding at UNISA for your higher certificate qualification, NSFAS will record your funding dating back to 2018.

Whenever NSFAS is applying any of the N+ rules, your years count from the year you first registered at an institution and not the year you first received funding. This is not fair though.
Again, NSFAS does not cancel your records when you change institutions. In your case, they will still consider your years of eligibility from your old institution and count the years you’ve been registered from your old institution. So if you registered in 2017, NSFAS will fund you till 2021 and this includes the N+ rules so that, you get funded for the maximum of 5 years that NSFAS funds each student.

You should appeal and hope for approval. Although you e exceeded the funding years.
Hi, I got apporved for NSFAS funding in 2019 for a 3 year degree and 2021 was due to be my year of graduation. I haven’t completed my majors, simply because I have modules I did not pass – I understand that. You don’t have to panic. NSFAS has made an official statement that they’re working on the problem to resolve it and that their website will come back online soon. So, you should keep trying.
HI I Got approved for Nsfas for funding 2019 what then I was doing HC certicate and then 2020, I was rejected due to poor performance and then i applied for appeal and then nsfas continued to fund me… Than this year I was told to reapplied again for nsfas since I finished HC and I’m about to start my bcom… And then the status for 2022 application was unsuccessful and the reason is N+ Rule… So does that mean I won’t be funded for this year?.. You should appeal to Nsfas. You still get a chance and qualify for funding even with the N+rules.
Do we apply for the N+2 ourselves or do we get it automatically? According to NSFAS, when applying the N+ rules, they count the years from the year you registered and enroll in an institution and not from the year you got funded. Hence, if your first institution was Vaal in 2018, then according to NSFAS, you’ve been in school for 5 years which is the maximum number of years NSFAS funds students. Therefore, we suggest that you appeal to get your last funding in 2022.

The problem is Nsfas may probably insider that you should have completed your qualification since you started school from 2018. They think you’ve exceeded 5 years in school. So you’ll have to appeal and support your letter with documents to prove you was funded only from 2020. NSFAS will rectify their mistake and approves you for funding.

NSFAS only counts your funding from the year you’re approved and received funding. In your case, your NSFAS funding should count from 2019 when you started receiving funding began.

I’m asking on behalf of my friend so she started 2019 diploma and she was receiving nsfas..second year which was 2020 she failed two modules and she Did those modules 2021 plus 4 modules that she Did in the first semester meaning second semester she was doing these two modules that she didn’t pass in 2020 ..again she failed one twice so her question is will still receive funds from nsfas or she must appeal
The only way she will lose her funding according to the academic performance requirement rule is to fail to pass at least 50% of her modules. Thus considering all the modules she did, she should pass at least 50% in order to keep her NSFAS funding.

But then appeals for N+2 are not considered
NSFAS only applies the N+2 rule when a student needs additional 2 years of funding. However, you must qualify to meet the n+2 rule. Meaning you’ve not exceeded the extra two years of funding. Again, if you appeal for the N+2 rule but you have already been funded for 4 years, NSFAS will reject your application unless you appeal for the N+1 since NSFAS funds students for a maximum of 5 years.

The rules are currently not applied based on the year you registered. Rather it is applied based on the year you started to receive NSFAS funding.

No, their reason is a mistake. You still qualify for funding if need extra 2 years of funding to complete your qualification in 2022. It maybe that you’ll need more than 2 years and that could cause the rejection. However, you should appeal to Nsfas to get funding. Hi, can I get clarity here. Last time I check they said N+2 rule applies to students who registered before 2018 and the N+1 rule applies to students who registered 2018 onwards. Now I am comfused becuase I hear people say they both apply based on your situation. Let me make an example with my case. I enrolled 2018 in a 3 year degree. I was supposed to complete in 2020 but didn’t due to personal circumstances. Last year was supposed to be my final year and I was doing 12 modules of which were all final year modules. I passed 10 modules and failed 2. when I check my NSFAS status shows “Did not meet academic requirements”, instead of “exceeded N+ rule”, of which is the one that I thought was going to show.

The N+1 is applied when you need just 1 extra year of funding if you could not complete your qualification at the expected year. Likewise 2 years for the N+2.
In your case, you should complete in 2021 if your funding started from 2018. So, depending on the additional year(s) you need to complete, you should appeal to Nsfas. If it was a mistake on their side to claim you’ve exceeded your funding, they will rectify it and fund you.

If you fail your courses in your first year, you’ll need to appeal NSFAS for reconsideration of restoring your fund. What about when I have exceeded 5 years, but 6th year is only 3 first semester modules, do they fund me for that and considering it’s final year modules.

In your case, your previous 2 years at UniZulu plus the 4 years at DUT will be 6 years. In the best-case scenario, you’ll need to pay for your 4th year at DUT by yourself.

Once you take a gap year, NSFAS cancels your funding automatically. So, you’ll have to apply for the funding again. When you get the funding back, NSFAS records your funding from your previous institution, in your case UJ. That means, per NSFAS record, you’ve been funded for 2 years dating from 2019. As to the N+ rules, NSFAS will apply N+1 if you need an additional 1 year to complete your qualification and N+2 if you need additional two years to complete your qualification. In your case, it will be the N+1 since you reading a three (3) years degree program.
This N+1 & N+2 to me looks like a ploy designed by our government and Nsfas to halt the development of the disadvantage youth of this country. How can you deny a student, who’s excelling in his/her studies because he/she could not finish his/her degree first time. It’s ridiculous to measure the progress of students you feel they supposedly to have completed their degrees/diplomas by implementing these monstrous N+ rules. I think a need to look at the academic success of an individual rather than history of what happened. Also what choice are you giving those who you deem exceeded those N+, it shows that our education system is not interested in their strides to be practitioners in their chosen fields. Is there hope to make them believe they can be something out of nothing. Billions are being stolen every year in this country but you only implement strict, useless laws and regulations for those who are disadvantaged. Then if we argue about rights to quality education then implementing these N+ rule, is it not taking any right away from our students? We all want our second chances in life, so reconsidering removing N+ rules needs immediate evaluation. Let’s not be selective looking at what hindered the progress and development of our black children, education is the only hope that our black children needs to get back their pride and put them at the forefront and make their mark necessary to effect change in this democratic country. What Act in our Constitution forces an individual to pass his/her degree first time, social, psychological & political forces plays part in mental development of an individual,so those cannot be overlooked & underestimated when reinforcing those kinds of laws that seems to have changed the game for our black kids.

In applying the NSFAS N+ Rules, your funding is counted from the very first year you started receiving NSFAS funding. NSFAS has not yet made any official changes to the rule and that is how it’s currently implemented.
