You can only appeal to NSFAS for funding when you lose your funding for the reason that you could not meet the academic eligibility requirement of passing at least 50% of your modules.

Write an appeal letter and support it with your payslip (payslip must not be more than that of a 3 months payslip)to prove your claim.

This might be a mistake from NSFAS. So, you should appeal and upload supporting documents that will back your claim that you still qualify and have not failed your modules.

My NSFAS application was unsuccesful due to “Exceeding the n+ rule” ever since I was admitted by the institution I’m at, I have been passing with distinctions, I’m doing a 3 year Diploma and this year is my final year. Started in 2020, I’m quite aware that I should appeal but I’m not so sure as to what documents should I submit for the appeal. Please assist….

N.B In 2012 I was funded by nsfas at a different institution and in 2013 I was declined to receive funding in this regard I dropped out of school since I failed to meet the academic requirements. I’m assuming this might, perhaps be a reason why I was unsuccessful this year for NSFAS.

Reply
Universityonlineapplication February 9, 2022 - 7:33 am

When NSFAS approves you for funding, they include the year you first registered at an institution and not from the first year you started receiving funding from them. Since you started in 2012 and NSFAS can fund you for a total of 5 years, it seems that you have exceeded the years which you qualify for the funding. that’s why they said you’ve exceeded the N+ rule.

Hi I was studying at university of Johannesburg from 2012 for a bachelor of degree for 3 years as I was studying I was having financial problems, my mother was paying for me as she was working then it happens I added some 2 years so that my mother can afford as we were starting having financial problems and then I failed one module twice. as I was about doing my last year 2016 in we couldn’t afford to to pay the previous years tuition fees and I couldn’t register to finish my degree. I tried nsfas for couple of years eventually it approved in 2017 for me to finish my degree but I couldn’t register because the degree I was doing was face out and I was told to do my degree again so I had to apply again in 2017 for 2018 then I was told i don’t meet the requirements and I went back at the campus to know why I was told they will never going to allow me to do my degree again. That’s when I applied at university of South Africa in 2018 for 2019 I was my application was rejected and I kept applying until I was told my English matric results a low for the qualification I was to do it’s neither I take diploma in economics or I go back and rewrite my English so I went back and did my English last year 2021 as I’m accepted today by unisa but now nsfas says my application is unsuccessful because of n+2 what does that mean and I ever get funded by nsfas

When NSFAS is applying the N+ rules, they count your years from the first year you registered at an institution, in your situation 2012. This means you were expected to complete your 3 years degree in 2014. Since you couldn’t, even if you were to be funded based on the N+2 rule, you should have completed in 2016 since NSFAS funds students for a maximum of 5 years which means, you have exceeded the years that you qualify for funding. However, you can appeal and hope for the best.

As long as the course he chooses to read is under the NSFAS funded courses. Also, if his previous application was not approved, he needs to appeal since the application is closed and NSFAS is now receiving only appeals.

When appealing for NSFAS n+rule rejection, and the reasons options stated there are all not applicable to you, what do you do for you to send through your appeal? And what letter from the institution do you have to submit showing that you will complete within the +1 year?

Reply
Universityonlineapplication February 18, 2022 - 10:25 pm

It is very unfortunate for this situation. First of all, NSFAS is trying to prevent those affected by the N+ rules from appealing. And if your reason of appeal is not stated in the reasons of appeal option, it’s will be very difficult to suggest an option.

Again, there is no way you can prove to NSFAS that you’ll definitely complete with the said year unless you meet your academic performance requirement of passing at least 50% of your modules.

Reply

When NSSFAS is applying the N+ Rules, they consider the first year you registered in an institution and not the first year which you started getting funding. Unfortunately, the maximum number of years NSFAS can fund a student is 5 years. Since you first registered in 2009, you have exceeded your qualified years for funding. However, you can appeal and try because NSFAS has made changes in their system and some students are getting the opportunity to get funded when they don’t qualify.

You can add copies of your admission and first year of your registration records when appealing to NSFAS. These document can prove that you qualify for 1 more year for NSFAS funding since the maximum number of years NSFAS funds students is 5 years. Most importantly, you should add all supporting documents that NSFAS may ask.

If this your first year applying for NSFAS, then it’s obvious that is a system error. Again, if you’re a returning student but have not exceeded 5 years of funding, it’s also a system error. So appeal to nsfas and give reasons why you have not graduated with supporting documents to proof your claim. NSFAS thinks you’ve exceeded your funding limit.

You will have to write NSFAS appeal motivational letter. To be successful to get approval, you’ll have to give reasons why he couldn’t pass the 50% academic performance requirements. For example, on health grounds, etc. Again, NSFAS will evaluate your letter if it contains strong reason(s) to consider restoring his funding. So, word your letter to create empathy on your behalf.
