How do I notify NSFAS if I change Institution? This is one of the frequently asked questions by students who are funded by NSFAS.
Are you planning on changing your institution, have you changed your institution already and you’re wondering if NSFAS will be notified, how you should let NSFAS know you’re now in a new college or university?
Well, if you’re seeking answers to these questions, then you’re at the right place. Keep reading because we’re providing answers to all these questions and more.
So, let’s jump right to the topics to know how can you notify nsfas should you change institutions.
How Do I Notify NSFAS If I change Institution?
When you change or transfer from a new institution to another, both your old and new institutions should work together to send your academic and NSFAS registration data to NSFAS so that your funding gets re-evaluated according to NSFAS. However, getting funding at your news institution is not guaranteed.
This is because you still have to qualify for NSFAS to get funded even when you change your institution.
You don’t get funded right away simply because you changed your institution.
You should know that NSFAS will re-evaluate your funding to check if you meet the requirements for funding according to your new institution.
Again, it is not guaranteed that you’ll get funding at your new institution simply because you transferred or changed your college or university.
This is the simple answer to the question of how do I notify NSFAS if I change my institution.
Will NSFAS Still Fund Me If I Change Institution
Yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you if you change your institution. However, NSFAS will re-evaluate your funding to check if you still qualify for funding at your new institution.
However, until your new institution sends your registration date to NSFAS, you’ll not get your monthly allowances.
You should know that not all institutions are in partnership with the NSFAS program, especially if you changed to a private institution.
Do I Have To Reapply For NSFAS If I Change institution?
No, you don’t need to reapply for NSFAS if you change your university or tvet college. Changing your institution does not mean your funding is canceled or you don’t qualify for NSFAS anymore.
If you want to know when you’ll need to reapply, read When Do You Need To Reapply For NSFAS Funding? for in-depth answers and guidance to the question.
Nonetheless, you must be a funded student in your previous institution to continue to receive funding from NSFAS at your new institution.
Also, if you were not funded by NSFAS, then you’ll have to apply.
Will NSFAS Fund Me At My New Institution If I Failed In My Old Institution?
If you were funded by NSFAS in your previous institution but failed your modules and were able to change to a new one, NSFAS will not fund you. This is because your funding is already canceled when you failed.
If you still want to get financial support at your new college or university, you’ll have to Write NSFAS Appeal Motivational Letter so that you get funded again.
It is very important to know how many modules can you fail and still get NSFAS funding.
We do recommend you read Will NSFAS Fund Me If I Fail My Modules? for the answers.
Will NSFAS Fund Me If I Change Institution And Course?
Yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you if you change the course you were reading in your former institution from what you are reading in your new university. But you’ll still need to meet the requirements for NSFAs funding in your new institution.
Will NSFAS Know If I Change Institution?
NSFAS will not know if you change your institution unless your new tvet college or university sends NSFAS your registration data.
This is one of the questions related to how do I notify NSFAS if I change the institution.
Remember, for inquiries, you may want to go to www.nsfas.org.za

Hey I failed at UFS on 2020, now I am registered at Univen, and my nsfas status is Provincially Funded, does it means NSFAS will fund me, I reapplied last year.
Provisionally funded means your funding is approved but NSFAS is waiting for your registration data from your institution. So, if you have registered at UNIVEN, go to the bursary/finance office to make inquiries if they have provided your data to NSFAS.
I studied at UWC in 2021 ( a 4 year course) but couldn’t cope with the working purely online and it was a course I had no interest in. This year (2023) I have registered at CPUT (3 year course) for a course I am fully invested in and would like to complete. Will I be funded the entire 3 years and what would be the best way to let NSFAS know I am continuing to study?
Your eligible funding years will continue from when you started receiving funding at UWC. Again, that’s if you still qualify for NSFAS funding by the time you change the institution to CPUT.
So, check your funding progress and know your status. If your funding is active, then you’re good to go. If it’s canceled, then you’ll need to appeal to NSFAS for reconsideration.
Abigail, I called nsfas in 2022 concerning the allowance issue, they told me that I can’t be funded because I move from on institution to another, and change my cause. They told me to apply again, so I did apply again in November 2022,but to my surprise I received my allowance in December 2022. I am confused now. I am constantly checking my status it is still saying waiting for the academic results. Will this people fund me
What you need to do is to contact the bursary/finance office of your new institution to submit your academic results to NSFAS. The NSFAS will fix the issue for you.
I was funded by NSFAS in 2019. 2020 i changed an institution and a course, to a 3 years degree.
Does it mean i won’t be given an extra year in the new institution? Which is 2023? the 2019 year is considered as my N+ year?
Yes, you will still be funded for 2023. However, if you are not able to finish your course in 2023, NSFAS will not fund you in the next years.
I’m studying at University of Limpopo since 2021 but this year i registered at UNISA and also canceled my registration around March in UNISA and continued with University of Limpopo, I’ve been receiving allowance till June at UL but July till today i never received anything, I enquired with NSFAS and told me that they linked my registration with UNISA… They requested me to provide them with proof of deregistration and UNISA says they don’t provide such documents, and my registration was successfully canceled and “no allowance were allocated for me at UNISA”. How can i get helped regarding this issue because it’s complicated…UNISA only provided me with statement and NSFAS don’t want it they want proof of deregistration.
Try to notify NSFAS again that you’re a registered student at UL
I’m changing from tut to unisa and I’m funded by nsfas how do I notify nsfas that I’m changing institution
Hi, will Nsfas continue to fund me if i am on my third year and want to do a different course in another university?
Yes, changing your university or course does not disqualify you from NSFAS funding as long as they’re nsfas-funded. Again, they will only fund you with your remaining years of funding.
I am Abigail, I was studying in UMP, in 2021,i pass all modules. I apply UL and register there.iwas funded in UMP. so 1n 2022 I am registered in UL and NSFAS DID give me allowance until August and stop. Why. September and October I did not get allowance. Help please.
With such case, we suggest you make inquiries from the bursary/finance office for an assistant to go to NSFAS office to make an inquiry. You can also call NSFAS with their toll-free number.
Hi can I ask if it is possible to return to Unisa if I was once a student since 2019 till 2021 then changed to Tut this year but because of personal reasons would it be possible to return back to Unisa & Will NSFAS fund me next year
Yes, you can return to UNISA with NSFAS funding.
I’m currently studying at a Tvet college and I’m planning to register for university next year will nsfas continue to fund me
Yes, changing institution from TVET to university does not disqualify you from NSFAS funding. However, you must make sure that you meet the requirements for the funding.
I did my first year at different university in 2019 funded by NSFAS, 2020 i moved to another institution, i registered for a 4 years degree (extended ), 2023 is suppose to be doing my first year. Will NSFAS still fund me? Does NSFAS consider extend degrees?
We do recommend that you read Does NSFAS Fund Extended Curriculum Programmes? for detailed explanation.
I AM DOING B ADMINISTRATION WHICH TAKE 3 YEARS ,AND I WANT TO CHANGE THE INSTITUTION AND ALSO THE COURSE (BCOM IN ACCOUTING WHICH IS 5 YEARS) , WILL NSFAS CONTINUE TO FUND ME UNTIIL I’M DONE DOING MY NEW COURSE.
OH I’M I DOING LEVEL 1
NSFAS will still fund you if you change your institution or course as long as the institution is a public one and the course is an NSFAS-funded course.
Again, with the funding years, NSFAS will continue to fund you for the remaining years of the B Administration. This means, that if you have been funded for 1 year, you’re left with 4 years of funding years.
In that case, you’ll fund your for the last year of your BCOM in Accounting
What will happen if I de-register in the institution I am studying with now but I failed 2 of 11 modules and I want to change new institution and course.
Will NSFAS still fund me again?
Firstly, changing institution and course does not disqualify you from NSFAS funding as long as the new institution and course are NSFAS-funded.
Secondly, you’ll have to inform NSFAS about your change of institution and course. You should contact the bursary/finance office of your new institution for the forms and guide to submit your academic records to NSFAS.
How do I sign lease agreement. I applied nsfas annually for 2022 ,
But m studying at central Johannesburg college do I need to reapply or just sign lease agreement
You do not need to reapply if your 2022 application was approved and you’re getting funding. Students who are already being funded do not need to apply every academic year.
Also, if you need any form, you check it from the nsfas website to get it.
Again, if you changed institutions and you want to tell NSFAS, just update your academic records in your account. You can consult the bursary/finance office at your new institution to assist you with it.
I’m on my first year and next year l’m changing both coarse and university, and l am nsfas beneficiary, will l have to alert nsfas that l have changed the university?or it will automatically see it ?
Yes, once you register at your new institution, you should go to the bursary/finance office for them to help you to submit your new academic records to NSFAS so that, NSFAS update your details in their system to match that of your new institution.
In that case, you will get your allowances as usual.
I changed both qualification and institution and I passed all my modules on the new qualification, I then applied for nsfas and it says funding condition not met but on my portal it says waiting for valid registration data from institution. Also funding eligible without admission. My question is, I’m I going to be funded?
If your status shows “funding eligible without admission”, it means you will be funded. However, NSFAS is waiting for your academic records from your institution so that they create a bursary for you.
So, contact your new institution’s bursary office to help you to submit your academic records to NSFAS.
What should I do if I’m a dual registered student, will nsfas still fund me for this year if I deregister to another university and left with recent institution?
Changing your institution does not disqualify you from NSFAS funding unless you move to a private institution. Again, when you change institutions, you have to contact the Finance Office of your new institution to help you submit your new academic records to NSFAS so that, they update your data in their system.
I am currently doing my second year and the duration of my current course is 3 years. I want to change my course and the institution next year to another 3 year course, will nsfas continue to fund me ?
In your case, you would expect NSFAS to find you for 6 years. However, the maximum years of funding are 5 including N+ rule. Probably you may be lucky and it could be that NSFAS will strike you with the eligible years of funding rule.
Again, if you are in your second year, it means you have 3 years of funding to reach the maximum years of NSFAS funding. This means you’ll probably fund yourself in your last year at the institution you will be moving to.
My son was academically excluded for extended program in 2020 he filled 1 module second semester out 4 he was nsfas beneficiary, and got accepted to another university for 2023 for BSc. He will be funded?
As long as he still meet the 50% of his modules, he will still be funded by NSFAS.
How would de-registering at this time will affect my NSFAS funding as I am willing to re-register next year because I have multiple wrong modules registered?
If you take a gap year, NSFAS will automatically cancel your funding since you’ll not be able to meet the academic eligibility requirements of passing at least 50% of your modules which helps you to keep your funding.
In that case, you’ll need to apply again for NSFAS if you intend to go back to school the next year.
However, in case you’ll not take a gap year but will change your course next year, then you should make sure you pass 50% of your current modules and also make sure the course you register for next year are under the NSFAS-funded courses.
Will Nsfas fund me if I failed one module at my previous college and changed to another institution?
You will still be funded unless you fail to meet the academic eligibility requirement which is to pass at least 50% of your modules. So, if you failed one module and still got at least 50%, then NSFAS will continue to fund you at your new institution.
I’m currently studying at UNISA as a first year. So now I want to take a transfer to wits and I applied for first year and a new course. And the time I applied for NSFAS it was supposed to fund me for 3 years and now since I applied to a new institution for first year with will be 3 years, will nsfas still continue funding me until I finish?
Yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you unless you fail to meet the academic eligibility requirements which is passing at least 50% of your modules.
will nsfas drop you in the second semester, if a module is blocked because you failed and left with only one for the second semester
NSFAS will only stop funding you if you fail 50% of your modules. Or better put, if you do not pass at least 50% of your modules.
Good afternoon
when I applied for funding last I applied to study at uj for teaching but got rejected due to space constraints. So now I applied at unisa for consumer science and temporarily registered. will nsfas be able to pay my registration fee at unisa ?
Yes, they will pay if you’re approved for the funding. Again, you’ll have to update your academic records in their system so that they get to know you’re now at UNISA and not UJ.
So im studying at unisa and next year i want to study at college how will nsfas continue fund me? Must i re apply
Your college will have to send your academic records to NSFAS and NSFAS will check if you still qualify for the funding before they continue to fund you.
I’m currently doing BA, registered 10 modules for this year and I want to change my qualification to B Ed with the same registered modules for BA for second semester so will NFSAS continue to fund me or what will happen to my already registered modules? I’m only changing qualification but not registered modules.
Yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you so far as the course you change to, is NSFAS funded. Fortunately, B Ed is funded by NSFAS. Again, you must still qualify for the funding by passing at least 50% of the modules of your previous course.
I want to deregister at Unisa and register at
the college. What should I do?
If you decide to no longer study at UniSA, you will need to fill in a Leave of Absence or Withdrawal from Program form, located under Student Forms, and submit it to Campus Central. You do not need anyone’s permission to withdraw from the University.
After you have submitted your forms, you can go to register at the college you prefer to continue your studies.
I was studying in westcol college from 2020 until 2021 and in 2022 I went to another college south west Gauteng college to finish my final year, which I did apply for nsfas but when I check mynsfas portal it still shows my previous institution not the new college. what must I do to resolve this issue
You have to prompt your new institution in this case (Gauteng College) to provide your new academic records to NSFAS and NSFAS will update your information in their database. You should make inquiries from the Financial Aid Office of Gauteng College to assist you in the update.
What can I do if my NSFAS funding payed to the wrong institution that I was deregistered in and register to another university that I’m currently studying at .
Whenever you register at a new institution other than the one you initially applied for NSFAS with, you’ll have to update your academic records through your new institution. We suggest that you go to the Financial Aid Office of your institution for direct access to send the new academic records of your current institution to NSFAS.
Will nsfas fund me if i change institution and course?
Yes, you’ll be funded. You should read Will NSFAS Fund Me If I Change Course? for further explanation.
I applied in 2021 both for nsafs and university then when I registered but again deregistetrd after a month. This year my application status is saying I’m funded at the university l was funded in but I’m now at another university. What should I do in order for my funding to change from my previous institution to the current one.
You have to go to the Financial Aid Office of your new institution for them to help you submit your new institution and academic records to NSFAS
What happens if I transfer to another university, will nsfas continue to fund me and what procedures should I follow
Yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you when you change universities. However, if you failed to meet the academic requirements at your former institution, you’ll not be funded.
You should contact the Financial Aid Office in your current institution to help update your academic records to NSFAS and you’re good to go.
Will NSFAS still fund me ? Because I have asked someone to help me register for NSFAS last year December so the person used my previous college name where I was studying when he helped me so I am worried if NSFAS will fund me because it said I didn’t meet the institution requirements please I need help
Whenever you change institutions, you should update your institution information for NSFAS to also update your records. Failing to do so means, NSFAS cannot verify your academic records and that will unfortunately cost you the funding.
You should contact the Financial Aid Office of your current institution to lead you to make all the necessary updates to your academic records to NSFAS.
We also recommend that you read What Happens To NSFAS When You Change University? for detailed information on what to do.
What happens if nsfas pays my fees to the wrong institution that I deregistered over the phone only to find out that they never deregistered me? And now I’m owing the current institution
With such an issue, we suggest you make an inquiry from the Finance Office of your current institution to communicate with your former institution to resolve the situation.
How do I notify NSFAS if I’m changing a university? Is there a form that I need to fill
Wonderful ?
