Will NSFAS fund me if I fail my modules? This is one of the frequently asked questions by students who are funded by NSFAS.

Well, if you’re looking for the answers to this question, then you’re on the right page.

In this article, we’re answering the question of whether NSFAS will fund you if you fail your modules.

So, let’s go straight to the question and give you the right answer.

Will NSFAS Fund Me If I Fail My Modules?

No, NSFAS will stop funding you if you fail your modules. According to the NSFAS policy agreement, students must pass at least 50% of their modules and pass the academic performance of their institution in order to continue to receive funding.

So, NSFAS will keep funding you as long as you meet the academic performance requirement.

Will NSFAS Fund Me If I Fail One Module?

Yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you if you fail one module as long as you meet the academic performance of passing 50% of your modules.

Moreover, failing one module is not enough for you to not get a 50% pass on your modules.

Will NSFAS Fund Me If I Fail Two Modules?

Yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you if you fail two modules but only when you still fit in the 50% academic performance pass.

If your two modules prevent you from getting a 50% pass of your modules, then NSFAS will stop funding you.

Will NSFAS Fund Me If I Fail Three Modules?

NSFAS will keep funding you if you fail three modules as long as you still pass the 50% academic performance of your modules.

However, if your three failed modules prevent you from getting a 50% pass on your modules, then NSFAS will automatically stop funding your qualification.

Will NSFAS Fund Me If I Fail All My Modules?

Yes, NSFAS will stop funding you if you fail all your modules which will automatically prevent you from meeting the academic performance requirement of passing at least 50% of your modules.

You will have to Reapply For NSFAS if you fail all your modules and your funding is revoked.

REMEMBER: www.nsfas.org.za is the official webpage of NSFAS.

We do hope this article on will nsfas fund myself if I fail my modules were helpful.

Changing institutions is not a problem as long as the one you go to is a public university. Again, NSFAS will fund you only if you still qualify for the funding at your previous TVET College.

Hello please help here

I am still within the N years but I failed 50% of my modules , now that I have to appeal I am also required to submit propensity letter , how will it work since I have not exceeded my N years ? Should I even ask for it from the institution and how will I ask for it ?

Reply
Universityonlineapplication February 10, 2023 - 10:51 am

Yes, you should ask from your institution. Also, since you’ve not exceeded the N+rule, your appeal might be considered.

Just make your appeal letter have more empathy and give a convincing reason that accounted for your failing to meet the academic performance requirements of passing 50% of your modules.

Yes, it’s 50% of your registered modules that you’re expected to pass.

The rule still remains that you must pass at least 50% of your modules to keep your funding. If failing 2 out of 5 modules makes you pass the 50% mark, then yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you.

Reply

Yes, but you’ll have to notify NSFAS of your new institution so that they can use that record for your funding. If you don’t do, they will use your previous TVET and hence, you’ll not get your allowances.

Just pass 50% of your modules. 3 out of 8 is not up to 50%. Again, you should try to check your NSFSA status whenever you want to know if you’re still funded or not.

Last year (2021)I got excluded by a University and I couldn’t Appeal because it was too late when I saw my email address Messages. I was studying online (and I didn’t have a phone then) due to the Covid19 restrictions and I faced a lot of challenges. This year I want to go back to Varsity. I would like to know if NSFAS will Fund me should I get an institution?

SASSA will continue to fund you as long as you pass at least 50% of your modules. Again, with the funding related to semesters, it depends on how you’re affected by the N+ rule.

We do recommend that you read What Is NSFAS N+ Rule for further explanation.

Kay July 1, 2022 - 11:37 am

Thank you so much! I am currently doing a BA and was only funded by Nsfas from last Year Jan (second year). I was wondering if they see the semester as final, does the funding stop. But it seems it carries on based on passing 50% of modules taken. I do not think I am affected by the N+ Rule as I have not been funded for the full duration of my studies. First year – I paid myself. Second Year – Nsfas funded, Third Year – Nsfas. But thank you so much again!

Universityonlineapplication July 1, 2022 - 11:44 am

When NSFAS is applying the N+Rule, they count your eligible funding years from the first year you registered in an institution. So, the N+Rule is not based on when NSFAS started funding you, but on when you first registered in an institution whether you got funded in your first year or not.

For example, if you registered in 2020 but got funded in 2022, NSFAS will count your funding years from 2020 when applying the N+Rule. This is unfair but that is how the system works now.

Mandy June 6, 2022 - 9:32 am

If you failed more than 50% of your modules and nsfas canceled your funding can you pay for the failed modules and re apply for funding again when completed?

Reply

Yes, you’ll pay for the failed modules if NSFAS is not funding you. Then you will appeal to NSFAS for reconsideration by writing NSFAS motivational appeal letter.

Will Nsfas fund you if in first semester you fail 4 modules out of 7 ?

Reply
Universityonlineapplication June 4, 2022 - 10:09 am

When it comes to NSFAS academic performance eligibility, the only way NSFAS will stop funding you is when you fail to pass at least 50% of your modules. So, if failing 4 modules out of 7 makes you pass 50% of your aggregated modules, then you’ll be funding.

However, if failing 4 modules out of 7 makes you fail to meet the 50% modules pass requirement, then NSFAS will stop funding you.

Reply

If your current status shows that you’re funded for 2022, then the NSFAS status is correct. You only have to work with the Financial Aid Office of your institution to make them understand that you’re funded.

Also, you should check if NSFAS has created a bursary for you especially when you change institutions.

First, changing institutions does not affect your NSFAS funding as long as the institution is a public institution.
Second, NSFAS will fund you if you pass 50% of your modules. So if you still met the academic performance requirement after failing the 3 modules, NSFAS will fund you.

I am funded by NSFAS as from 2018 and in the 2020 academic year, the second semester I was required to go out of the university to search for a Company to do experiential training before I proceed to my final year(3rd year) in 2021 and unfortunately I did not get it. Experiential training is the six months to a one-year essential module for everyone doing a Diploma in Building at Mangosuthu. At the beginning of 2021, I obtained it and I had to do it the whole year. In December 2021 I submitted and pass all required assessments, now this year I plan to do the final year of my Diploma. Now my Question is can NSFAS fund me for 2022?

For my first year, I failed 3 modules (2019) and in my last year(2021) I failed 2 modules, So basically I have failed 5 modules in total that I need to redo this year 2020 first semester. WIll NSFAS continue to fund me?

You lose your NSFAS funding when you fail all your modules. However, you can write a strong motivational appeal letter if you can support your claim with some sort of evidence of the natural disaster. You should read this How To Write A Good NSFAS Appeal Letter For Funding

Yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you if you passed the academic requirements. If after failing three modules and you still passed at least 50% of the total modules, you’ll keep your funding.

Yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you if you still meet the academic performance requirements. You must pass 50% of your models in aggregate to keep your funding. So if you failed one module but still passed the academic requirement, then NSFAS will continue to fund you.

NSFAS will find you if you pass at least 50% of your modules. So, you should consider that if you got 50% pass after failing 3 out of the 4 modules.

Yes, if you write your appeal letter and can prove it with a medical condition report, NSFAS will fund you. In fact, I think NSFAS takes health issues seriously, and hopefully, your appeal with a medical report will do much for you. However, you should write your appeal with strong wording that will call for empathy.

I recommend you read this article to write for the guide to write a good appeal letter.
