Do you want to know everything about the NSFAS N Rule; NSFAS N+ Rule? Are you confused about the NSFAS N+1 rule and NSFAS N+2 rule? Well then, you’re at the right place. Keep reading.

In this article, we’re explaining the full meaning of the NSFAS N Rules.

So let’s jump into the topic and of the day, the N+1 rule and the N+2 rule of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)

What Is NSFAS N Rule?

The NSFAS N+ Rule is a pivotal rule instituted by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme to add additional years of funding to students who may not complete their qualifications for the registered years expected.

For example, students are expected to finish their bachelor’s degree for four academic years. However, a student may fail his modules, or take a gap year, or cannot finish the degree as expected for whatever reason.

In such cases, NSFAS will have to apply the NSFAS N+ Rule to continue to fund students who may need additional years to complete their qualifications.

What Are The Types of NSFAS N Rule?

Currently, NSFAS operates the NSFAS N+ Rule in two forms. The NSFAS N+1 Rule and the NSFAS N+2 Rule. Both rules are not the same and they are applied in different situations.

So, let’s go straight into knowing how the NSFAS rules of N+ are applied and the students who qualify for each of the rules.

What Is NSFAS N+1 Rule?

The NSFAS+1 Rule is applied when a student has only N+1 years to complete his or her qualification.

In the rule, the “N” means the minimum number of years a student is registered to complete a qualification whiles the “+1” means the extra one-year NSFAS has to fund the student for not completing the qualification for the expected years.

For example, the minimum number of years to finish a bachelor’s degree is four (4) years. So in the NSFAS N Rule, the N for bachelor’s degree student will mean the student is expected to complete his or her higher education qualification in four years.

The +1 in the NSFAS+1 Rule means NSFAS will have to fund the student an additional one year because the student couldn’t finish his or her qualification as expected.

This is what the NSFAS N+1 Rule means in the NSFAS N+ Rule.

You should read NSFAS N+1 Rule – Fully Explained for detailed information.

What Is NSFAS N+2 Rule?

In the NSFAS N Rule, the N+2 Rule means a student needs N+2 years to complete his or her degree qualification.

The “N” means the number of years the student is registered to finish the qualification whiles the “+2” means the extra two years NSFAS has to fund the student for not completing the qualification for the expected years.

For example, a student reading a bachelor’s degree is expected to complete the qualification in four (4) academic years and NSFAS per the loan agreement is going to fund the student for four years.

However, in case the student could not finish the qualification in four years, then NSFAS will invoke the NSFAS N+ Rule which is the NSFAS N+ 2 Rules in this case

NSFAS fund students based on the duration of course or degree the student is registerd to study according to the loan agreement. The NSFAS N+ Rule is to add extra years in case a student fail a year.

You should read NSFAS N+2 Rule – Fully Explained for in-depth information.

When Do You Need NSFAS N+1 Rule?

In the NSFAS N+ Rules, a student will need the NSFAS N+1 Rule in case he needs an extra one year to complete the qualification because he failed one year.

When Do You Need NSFAS N+2 Rule?

In the NSFAS N+ Rule, a student will need the NSFAS N+2 rule when there is the need for an extra two years to complete the qualification because he failed.

How Does NSFAS N+ Rule Work?

According to www.nsfas.org.za, (NSFAS) when applying the rule, both the N+1 Rule and the N+2 rules refer to all the years a student has been registered for higher education study, public university, or TVET.

The rule is not based on whether the student was funded by NSFAS or not. Again, the rules still apply even if the student change institution.

As we learn about the NSFAS N Rules, don’t forget to apply for NSFAS. Go here to NSFAS Online Application to apply for NSFAS funding.

But do you know you have to meet certain NSFAS requirements in order to be funded by NSFAS? Check the Requirements For NSFAS before you begin to apply for funding.

Does NSFAS Fund N 1 Students?

Yes, NSFAS funds N 1 students who need the extra year of funding to complete their qualifications. Students who could not finish their course or degree and need an additional one year to complete will use the NSFAS N1 Rule.

Does NSFAS Fund N 2 Students?

Yes, NSFAS funds N 2 students who need the extra two years of funding to complete their qualifications. Students who could not finish their course or degree and need additional two years will use the NSFAS N2 rule.

Remember: If your application was unsuccessful, you can Reapply For NSFAS Online.

Again, returning students whose funding was revoked because they failed their modules will need to appeal.

We recommend that you read How To Write NSFAS Appeal Motivational Letter for the in-depth guide to writing the best appeal letter. You’ll also get some appeal samples as a roadmap to writing your appeal.

We do hope this article on NSFAS N Rule on NSFAS N+1 Rule (NSFAS n1 rule) and NSFAS N+2 Rule (NSFAS n2 rule) was helpful.

Hy I started studying from 2018 studying a 3 year diploma so but unfortunately is a bad luck for me because I’m partially disabled my right hand don’t work so I use my left hand to write which is contributing to my slow work pace; I got a time concertion which was written by my educational phycologist to my lectures, that when I’m writing an exam I get an extra 25 minutes per hour until I complete my studies at university but it only applied in my second year 2019, so in 2020(third year) I was affected By lockdown it was hard for me to get attention from my lectures and get my extra time, also in 2021 forth year of my studies, so I failed 4 modules now nsfas I’ve exceeded n+2 which is five years but I only studied for 4 years and I only got my extra time for one year I don’t know what I must do to get help

NSFAS considers the first year you registered at an institution and not when you started receiving funding when they’re applying the N+ rules.

Hello, I am studying a 3 years diploma and I am doing my second year this year, what I would like to know is that what will happen if I decide to stop doing it in second year and enroll in a 4 year program. How will the N+ rule affect me?

Universityonlineapplication September 13, 2022 - 9:25 pm

When you change course, NSFAS will still fund you. In your case, you have already been funded for 2 years and so, you’re left with 3 years of funding including the N+ rules to make your total funding 5 years.

This means, you’ll have to fund yourself for the last year when you change to do the 4-year program.

Noluthando February 11, 2022 - 10:11 pm

I still don’t understand this. When applying the N+2 rule to a four year degree, you get 6 years but in your replies I keep coming across the 5 years as a maximum. This is so confusing because I started in 2017 and I did not take a gap year or anything, I kept failing but this year I am supposed to be doing my final year. I was under the impression that NSFAS was going to fund me for 6 years N- being the 4 years duration of my degree +2 years added if I don’t finish my degree in time, which equals to 6 years. Please clarify this for me

I think it will be better if you can check your application status to know the current progress of your funding.

Also, you should understand that NSFAS N+1 rule applies and affects first-time entering students who first registered into a university or TVET college after December 2017.
This means the National Student Financial Aid Scheme will only affect the NSFAS N+1 rule on students who registered in 2017.

Again, this explains that students who registered in January 2018 are not affected by the NSFAS N+1 Rule instead, NSFAS will use the N+2 rule on all students who registered in 2018 onwards.

We assume that the appeal button is not showing in your mynsfas account because you’ve exceeded the n+ rules, and NSFAS does not want you to appeal. However, you can try to appeal by email. We are not for sure this will work out but just try it through applicationreview@nsfas.org.za

He failed twice due to personal reasons. Now he wants to appeal but there is no option for N + rule only other which is not relevant to his rejection.

Reply
agyeijohnson February 23, 2022 - 8:46 pm

First, when NSFAS is applying the n+ rule, they include the year you first registered at an institution. In your case 2018 and not when you started receiving funding which is 2019 in your case.
Second, he still qualifies for NSFAS for 2022 since it will be his last year of funding with the N+2 rule. which makes the reason for his rejection incorrect.
Again, he should select the one close to the reason for rejection and provide the letter from his institution to support why he chose that option as well as a motivational letter. University students were advised to use the 60 or fewer credits reason. Obtained this information from an NSFAS agent.

Since the maximum years of NSFAS funding (including N+ rules) is 5 years, you still qualify for funding for 2022. If you don’t complete your degree this year, you’ll not get NSFAS funding henceforth.

Although, NSFAS has not made a statement to explain the main reasons why the appeal tab is missen in some students’ MyNSFAS Accounts. However, we can assume that they have intentionally removed it from those who have exceeded their funding.

Nonetheless, you can make queries from the Financial Aid Office in your institution.

I registered my first year at UJ for Bed funded by funza lushaka in 2015 and 2016 used my own funding. I was not studying the rest of the years but in 2019 registered for llb extended program for 5 years. I was funded until 2021 and 2022 states the above. How will my funding status be after appeal according to the rules since I still have next year to complete in record time.

Reply
Universityonlineapplication February 22, 2022 - 11:38 pm

The question of whether your appeal will be approved is based on the reasons you give in your appeal and how strong your claims are. In fact, only NSFAS has the power to approve or decline your appeal.
Again, when NSFAS is applying any of the N+ rules, they consider your qualification years from the year you first registered, in your case 2015, and not when you first got approved for NSFAS funding of which is 2019 in your case.

You can appeal and support your appeal with your registration records. but you should know that, when NSFAS is applying the N+ rules, they consider the first year you registered at an institution, in your case at UNISA even if you did not receive funding from them.

Hi,
I enrolled in 2018 for a Bcom extended program (a four year program) which I was funded since 2018, I then switched degrees (still in the Bcom field) in 2020 which added one extra year to my initial four years making it now five years . I am doing my final year this year (2022). Will Nsfas still fund me this year?

Because when I checked my NSFAS status it says I am funded, however the financial aid at school say that I have exceeded the N+ rule and that I will have to appeal . I am quiet confused at this moment because there was no appeal button on mynsfas portal since it says I am funded

Your response will be highly appreciated

You still qualify for funding for 2022 but you’ll lose your qualification for funding if you do not complete your qualification this year. NSFAS can fund a student for a maximum of 5 years.

Hi, I hope you are doing well.

I would like some help and clarity in my situation please. I first started studying at UP in 2017 but got excluded so in 2018 I went to Unisa for a semester, then made my way back to UP in 2019. All these years, I wasn’t funded by NSFAS. Then in 2020, I was successfully funded up until the end of April, then they revoked and cancelled my funding out of the blue at the end of April. Then I applied for 2021 and got successfully funded for the first time by NSFAS last year. Now my continuation status says that it’s unsuccessful because I exceed the N+ rule, yet my degree is a 5 year degree and I have only been funded for one year with NSFAS, let alone that this year is only the 5th year of my studies currently. How come and why?

Please explain it to me in my situation because from how I see it, I’ve only been funded for one year so it’s impossible for me to exceed the N+ rule in light of that. Or maybe I don’t understand it well. Please help by explain in my case. Thanks.

Whenever NSFAS is applying the N+ rules, they consider your qualification from the first year you registered and since NSFAS funds students for a maximum of 5 years including the N+ rules, you may not qualify because you’ve exceeded the 5 years of funding.
However, you can try to appeal and hope for the best. A lot has changed in the NSFAS system. So, shoot your shot.

NSFAS funds students for a maximum of 5 years. So, if you registered in 2018, your last year of funding will be 2022.

I did two short courses in 2017 and another two in 2018, which were paid by my employers. I applied to study towards a diploma in 2019 and began my studies in 2020. I applied to nsfas in my second year of study and was successful and they funded me for the year of 2021. Now I’m in my final year in 2022 which mean that this will be my second year of Nsfas funding. Will the short courses of 2017 and 2018 effect my funding criteria or am I still eligible for funding?

Reply

No, since NSFAS does not fund short courses you’re safe.

NSFAS can fund a student per 1 qualification at a time. If you’re doing a degree, you can apply for the funding. However, if you were receiving NSFAS funding at UNISA for your higher certificate qualification, NSFAS will record your funding dating back to 2018.

I passed then took a gap year in 2019,i then registered again in 2019 for a new course in university and got funded from 2020-2021 so I’m asking if they also count the gap year? Since if they do I won’t qualify for the N+1 rule as my course is 3 years.. Basically I only got funded by Nsfas for 3 years(college + 2years in varsity)

Reply

Yes, they countghe gap years. Infact, the gap year doesn’t matter because they will count your years from when you registered at an institution.

Reply
Universityonlineapplication March 7, 2022 - 7:05 pm

First, yes, you can appeal but only if the appeal tab appears in your MyNSFAS Account.
However, NSFAS has intentionally removed the appeal tab from some students who are affected by the N+ rules.
Second, it seems it was a mistake because if you registered last year (2021) then you still qualify for NSFAS unless you have registered at an institution before which has resulted in you exceeding the eligible funding years.

You still qualify for NSFAS funding since you only registered in 2019. You have not exceeded the years you qualify for funding, thus the 5 years maximum years that NSFAS funds students. You should appeal.

The maximum number of years NSFAS funds students is 5 years and this includes the N+ rules. If you were funded from 2017, you exceeded your years of funding in 2021.

Reply
willy February 1, 2022 - 7:33 am

hi i dont understand because on the other comments you said nsfas should cover students for 5 years and if it happens that you were excluded for a year or 2 years from nsfas you have to apply again for the remaining years. e.g i was funded on 2017 then i failed and i changed institution i started on 2018, 2019 without nsfas then i applied again i got funded on 2020 and 2021 does that mean i covered the 5 years for nsfas?

Reply
Universityonlineapplication February 1, 2022 - 9:07 am

Whenever NSFAS is applying any of the N+ rules, your years count from the year you first registered at an institution and not the year you first received funding. This is not fair though.
Again, NSFAS does not cancel your records when you change institutions. In your case, they will still consider your years of eligibility from your old institution and count the years you’ve been registered from your old institution. So if you registered in 2017, NSFAS will fund you till 2021 and this includes the N+ rules so that, you get funded for the maximum of 5 years that NSFAS funds each student.

Hello, according to the minister nzimande statement show the this N+2 rule applied to the student started their degrees before December 2017 and N+1 rule applied to those who registered in 2018 onwards. Does this means that the student started their degrees 2018 and doing 3 years degree 2021 was the last funded by Nsfas. Please clarify that because we are facing as difficult time

Reply
Universityonlineapplication January 31, 2022 - 10:24 pm

NSFAS N+1 rule applies and affects first-time entering students who first registered into a university or TVET college after December 2017. Again, this explains that students who registered in January 2018 are not affected by the NSFAS N+1 Rule instead, NSFAS will use the N+2 rule on all students who registered in 2018 onwards.
You can check the detailed information from here Does NSFAS N+1 Rule Apply To Students Who Registered In 2017?

Also, the maximum number of years NSFAS funds students is 5 years. Therefore, if you registered in 2018 and you’re expected to complete your qualification in 2021, still qualify for 1 extra year of funding in case they need it to complete in 2022.

According to NSFAS, when applying the N+ rules, they count the years from the year you registered and enroll in an institution and not from the year you got funded. Hence, if your first institution was Vaal in 2018, then according to NSFAS, you’ve been in school for 5 years which is the maximum number of years NSFAS funds students. Therefore, we suggest that you appeal to get your last funding in 2022.

The problem is Nsfas may probably insider that you should have completed your qualification since you started school from 2018. They think you’ve exceeded 5 years in school. So you’ll have to appeal and support your letter with documents to prove you was funded only from 2020. NSFAS will rectify their mistake and approves you for funding.

The only way she will lose her funding according to the academic performance requirement rule is to fail to pass at least 50% of her modules. Thus considering all the modules she did, she should pass at least 50% in order to keep her NSFAS funding.

NSFAS only applies the N+2 rule when a student needs additional 2 years of funding. However, you must qualify to meet the n+2 rule. Meaning you’ve not exceeded the extra two years of funding. Again, if you appeal for the N+2 rule but you have already been funded for 4 years, NSFAS will reject your application unless you appeal for the N+1 since NSFAS funds students for a maximum of 5 years.

No, their reason is a mistake. You still qualify for funding if need extra 2 years of funding to complete your qualification in 2022. If you couldn’t complete your qualification in 2021 because you failed your modules, you lose your funding if you couldn’t pass 50% of the modules. Therefore, if you need an extra year to finish in 2022, you’ll need to appeal to NSFAS to get funded by the N+1 rule.

Hi, can I get clarity here. Last time I check they said N+2 rule applies to students who registered before 2018 and the N+1 rule applies to students who registered 2018 onwards. Now I am comfused becuase I hear people say they both apply based on your situation. Let me make an example with my case. I enrolled 2018 in a 3 year degree. I was supposed to complete in 2020 but didn’t due to personal circumstances. Last year was supposed to be my final year and I was doing 12 modules of which were all final year modules. I passed 10 modules and failed 2. when I check my NSFAS status shows “Did not meet academic requirements”, instead of “exceeded N+ rule”, of which is the one that I thought was going to show.

So my question is should I appeal or I am covered by the N+2 rule or what? If I should appeal where can I get the appeal form? I have looked in the website I don’t see it even the submission tab for appeal is not there.

The N+2 Rule us not limited to students who registered before 2018. The rule is simple, NSFAS only applies it if a student still qualifies for funding but needs extra 2 years if funding to complete his or her qualification. Same as the N+1 if a student need extra 1 year. If your status shows that you didn’t meet the academic requirements of passing at least 50% of your modules, then you need to appeal. However it could be system mistake. In such case, go to The Financial Aid Office of your institution and they will send your academic records to NSFAS to rectify the problem. On the other hand, if you failed the 50% module requirements, then appeal to NSFAS. About not seeing the Submit Appeal tab, keep trying, it’s a system error and lots of people are experiencing same.

The N+1 is applied when you need just 1 extra year of funding if you could not complete your qualification at the expected year. Likewise 2 years for the N+2.
In your case, you should complete in 2021 if your funding started from 2018. So, depending on the additional year(s) you need to complete, you should appeal to Nsfas. If it was a mistake on their side to claim you’ve exceeded your funding, they will rectify it and fund you.

It depends onthe years you need to finish your qualification. If you need 1 year, they’ll apply the N+1, if you need 2 years, they will apply the N+2. So, check the number of years you need and then appeal. Once your institution send them your academic records, they will know the rule they need to apply to fund you.

Yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you with the N+Rule if need either 1 or 2 years to complete your two modules as long as you meet the requirements of passing at least 50% of your modules.

If you fail your courses in your first year, you’ll need to appeal NSFAS for reconsideration of restoring your fund. NSFAS will not apply the N+1 rule in your first year since you have more than one year to complete your qualification. The rule is applied when you need an “extra” one year to complete your qualification.

If you take a gap year after a year or 2 years in varsity, do you apply to Nsfas with your matric results?

Reply

You lose your NSFAS funding when you take a gap year. You’ll have to apply for NSFAS funding with your matric results if you want to get funded by NSFAS again.

Reply
Universityonlineapplication January 22, 2022 - 11:12 am

Yes, you qualify for NSFAS through the N+2 at the University of Johannesburg. But you’ll need to apply to get the funding since you took a gap year. However, if you’re funded at Kwazulu-natal, NSFAS will fund you for only 2 years at UJ with the NSFAS N+2

If you can complete both the extended program and the 3 years diploma qualifications in 5 years, then NSFAS will continue to fund you. However, if you intend to finish your qualification after 5 years, then you’ll have to pay your tuition by yourself for the next extra years.

You should appeal to NSFAS. It’s very important that you add your academic records to prove to NSFAS that you’ve been funded for 4 years starting from 2018. Anyways, if NSFAS is to fund you, it will fund you for just 1 year since the maximum number of years NSFAS funds students is currently 5 years.

You have to make sure you meet the Requirements For NSFAS before you apply for the funding. If you’re a returning student, make sure you passed at least 50% of your modules in addition to the general requirements for qualifying for NSFAS funding.

Hi i registered under foundation program in 2018 then did my first year of a 3 years Degree in 2019 and failed the last 2 years & 2022 i managed to pass .i never lost my NSFas because i was keeping up with the 50% mark ..
My question is Does NSFAs count my Foundation year ( i was funded but it is blank on my Nsfas cycle .no record of funding)
And Does the N rules starts after the 5years of funding or it is within that five years ?
What are the effects of this N-Rules ?

Reply
Universityonlineapplication January 15, 2022 - 7:38 am

NSFAS counts the very first time they approved you for funding, so yes, if you’re receiving funds at the foundation year, it will be counted. Again, the maximum number of years that NSFAS funds student is 5 years including the N+1 and N+2 rules.
This is because, you’re expected to complete your degree for 3 years and with the extra N+2, it will be 5 years. NSFAS will not fund you if you do not complete your qualification after 5 years.

So I have 2 years (2020 and 2021) registered at Higher Education and during that 2 I was funded by NSFAS. I have now registered for a 4 year degrees at DUT. How many years will NSFAS fund me?

Reply
Universityonlineapplication January 8, 2022 - 8:37 pm

NSFAS will only fund you for a maximum of five (5) years, based on the availability of funding each year. If you change your course or institution frequently and you take longer than five years to complete your qualification, you will have to pay for yourself until you graduate.

In your case, your previous 2 years at UniZulu plus the 4 years at DUT will be 6 years. In the best-case scenario, you’ll need to pay for your 4th year at DUT by yourself.

How does that affect my funding with regards to the N+ rule. How many years am I left with fir NSFAS to fund me? The degree I’m currently doing is 3 years

Reply
Universityonlineapplication January 5, 2022 - 8:02 pm

Once you take a gap year, NSFAS cancels your funding automatically. So, you’ll have to apply for the funding again. When you get the funding back, NSFAS records your funding from your previous institution, in your case UJ. That means, per NSFAS record, you’ve been funded for 2 years dating from 2019. As to the N+ rules, NSFAS will apply N+1 if you need an additional 1 year to complete your qualification and N+2 if you need additional two years to complete your qualification. In your case, it will be the N+1 since you reading a three (3) years degree program.

This N+1 & N+2 to me looks like a ploy designed by our government and Nsfas to halt the development of the disadvantage youth of this country. How can you deny a student, who’s excelling in his/her studies because he/she could not finish his/her degree first time. It’s ridiculous to measure the progress of students you feel they supposedly to have completed their degrees/diplomas by implementing these monstrous N+ rules. I think a need to look at the academic success of an individual rather than history of what happened. Also what choice are you giving those who you deem exceeded those N+, it shows that our education system is not interested in their strides to be practitioners in their chosen fields. Is there hope to make them believe they can be something out of nothing. Billions are being stolen every year in this country but you only implement strict, useless laws and regulations for those who are disadvantaged. Then if we argue about rights to quality education then implementing these N+ rule, is it not taking any right away from our students? We all want our second chances in life, so reconsidering removing N+ rules needs immediate evaluation. Let’s not be selective looking at what hindered the progress and development of our black children, education is the only hope that our black children needs to get back their pride and put them at the forefront and make their mark necessary to effect change in this democratic country. What Act in our Constitution forces an individual to pass his/her degree first time, social, psychological & political forces plays part in mental development of an individual,so those cannot be overlooked & underestimated when reinforcing those kinds of laws that seems to have changed the game for our black kids.

I started using NSFAS in 2017 then I left the institution for some personal reasons.

I then re-applied for NSFAS again in 2019 then I returned to VUT in 2020 and 2021 to complete my 3 year course. That means I got funded for 3 years out of 5 years of funding.

But this N+rule states otherwise coz it counts even those 2 years (2018 & 2019I was out of school, that’s not fair at all?.

Please can’t you re-evaluate the rule?

In applying the NSFAS N+ Rules, your funding is counted from the very first year you started receiving NSFAS funding. NSFAS has not yet made any official changes to the rule and that is how it’s currently implemented.
