Will NSFAS fund me if I fail my modules? This is one of the frequently asked questions by students who are funded by NSFAS.
Well, if you’re looking for the answers to this question, then you’re on the right page.
In this article, we’re answering the question of whether NSFAS will fund you if you fail your modules.
So, let’s go straight to the question and give you the right answer.
Will NSFAS Fund Me If I Fail My Modules?
No, NSFAS will stop funding you if you fail your modules. According to the NSFAS policy agreement, students must pass at least 50% of their modules and pass the academic performance of their institution in order to continue to receive funding.
So, NSFAS will keep funding you as long as you meet the academic performance requirement.
Will NSFAS Fund Me If I Fail One Module?
Yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you if you fail one module as long as you meet the academic performance of passing 50% of your modules.
Moreover, failing one module is not enough for you to not get a 50% pass on your modules.
Will NSFAS Fund Me If I Fail Two Modules?
Yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you if you fail two modules but only when you still fit in the 50% academic performance pass.
If your two modules prevent you from getting a 50% pass of your modules, then NSFAS will stop funding you.
Will NSFAS Fund Me If I Fail Three Modules?
NSFAS will keep funding you if you fail three modules as long as you still pass the 50% academic performance of your modules.
However, if your three failed modules prevent you from getting a 50% pass on your modules, then NSFAS will automatically stop funding your qualification.
Will NSFAS Fund Me If I Fail All My Modules?
Yes, NSFAS will stop funding you if you fail all your modules which will automatically prevent you from meeting the academic performance requirement of passing at least 50% of your modules.
You will have to Reapply For NSFAS if you fail all your modules and your funding is revoked.

I was a tvet college student and i failed two modules, now i want to apply for the same course at university will NSFAS FUND ME
Changing institutions is not a problem as long as the one you go to is a public university. Again, NSFAS will fund you only if you still qualify for the funding at your previous TVET College.
Hello please help here
I am still within the N years but I failed 50% of my modules , now that I have to appeal I am also required to submit propensity letter , how will it work since I have not exceeded my N years ? Should I even ask for it from the institution and how will I ask for it ?
Yes, you should ask from your institution. Also, since you’ve not exceeded the N+rule, your appeal might be considered.
Just make your appeal letter have more empathy and give a convincing reason that accounted for your failing to meet the academic performance requirements of passing 50% of your modules.
Hello can I please ask how does that 50% academic course credit for returning students work do they calculate the whole credits combined for my modules that I registered?because I registered 13 modules and cancelled 2 during the year did 11 passed 6 of them and failed 5.
Yes, it’s 50% of your registered modules that you’re expected to pass.
hi.will nsfas still fund me i pass all my first semster modules but fail 2 out 5 for second semester
The rule still remains that you must pass at least 50% of your modules to keep your funding. If failing 2 out of 5 modules makes you pass the 50% mark, then yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you.
2021 my last year I failed 5 modules out of 7 due to personal reasons and nsfas stoped funding me this year, did not appeal cause did not know n+2 applied. So now I wanted appeal but due to forgoting logging details i created new account, re – applied but application doesn’t show appeal, track process, and my field of study.
I don’t know what’s happening, or what to do, help
I suggest you go to NSFAS office or the bursary office of your institution for assistance.
(2021) I registered at tvet college and I didn’t attend at all due to not finding accommodation and I didn’t de register so will nsfas ever fund me if I go to another institution
Yes, but you’ll have to notify NSFAS of your new institution so that they can use that record for your funding. If you don’t do, they will use your previous TVET and hence, you’ll not get your allowances.
Hi , I’m doing 8 modules ,if I pass 3 will NSFAS continue to fund me next year ?
Just pass 50% of your modules. 3 out of 8 is not up to 50%. Again, you should try to check your NSFSA status whenever you want to know if you’re still funded or not.
if a person fails 5 out of 11 modules, because of “fail sub-exam” will Nsfas still fund…
NSFAS will only stop funding you if you fail to pass at least 50% of your modules.
will nsfas still continue to fund me if i fail 4 out of 13 modules?and im changing varsities next year
The only reason NSFAS will stop funding you as a continuous student is if you fail to pass at least 50% of your modules. If you fail and change institutions, NSFAS will still not fund you.
Last year (2021)I got excluded by a University and I couldn’t Appeal because it was too late when I saw my email address Messages. I was studying online (and I didn’t have a phone then) due to the Covid19 restrictions and I faced a lot of challenges. This year I want to go back to Varsity. I would like to know if NSFAS will Fund me should I get an institution?
Yes, all that you need is to meet the NSFAS funding requirements. You should see Requirements For NSFAS Online Application for details.
Can Nsfas stop funding you even though you didn’t get excluded by university?
The only means NSFAS will stop funding you is when you no longer qualify for the funding. We do recommend that you check Requirements For NSFAS for detailed information.
Hi, If you did not pass 50% of your modules first semester will nsfas still fund you second semester?
No, NSFAS will not fund you for the second semester if you do not meet the academic eligibility requirement of passing at least 50% of your modules in your previous semester.
You will have to appeal for reconsideration if you still want to be funded. You should read How To Write NSFAS Appeal Motivational Letter for the guide.
Will NSFAS stop funding me if I have failed 4/5 semester modules?
That means you have failed to pass 50% of your modules. If so, NSFAS will stop funding you.
Hi! I am a final year student funded by Nsfas. I did the last 4 modules this year in semester 1. If I fail 1 will they continue to fund me for this 1 module in semester 2 although I was supposed to finish in semester 1?
SASSA will continue to fund you as long as you pass at least 50% of your modules. Again, with the funding related to semesters, it depends on how you’re affected by the N+ rule.
We do recommend that you read What Is NSFAS N+ Rule for further explanation.
Thank you so much! I am currently doing a BA and was only funded by Nsfas from last Year Jan (second year). I was wondering if they see the semester as final, does the funding stop. But it seems it carries on based on passing 50% of modules taken. I do not think I am affected by the N+ Rule as I have not been funded for the full duration of my studies. First year – I paid myself. Second Year – Nsfas funded, Third Year – Nsfas. But thank you so much again!
When NSFAS is applying the N+Rule, they count your eligible funding years from the first year you registered in an institution. So, the N+Rule is not based on when NSFAS started funding you, but on when you first registered in an institution whether you got funded in your first year or not.
For example, if you registered in 2020 but got funded in 2022, NSFAS will count your funding years from 2020 when applying the N+Rule. This is unfair but that is how the system works now.
If you failed more than 50% of your modules and nsfas canceled your funding can you pay for the failed modules and re apply for funding again when completed?
Yes, you’ll pay for the failed modules if NSFAS is not funding you. Then you will appeal to NSFAS for reconsideration by writing NSFAS motivational appeal letter.
Will Nsfas fund you if in first semester you fail 4 modules out of 7 ?
When it comes to NSFAS academic performance eligibility, the only way NSFAS will stop funding you is when you fail to pass at least 50% of your modules. So, if failing 4 modules out of 7 makes you pass 50% of your aggregated modules, then you’ll be funding.
However, if failing 4 modules out of 7 makes you fail to meet the 50% modules pass requirement, then NSFAS will stop funding you.
Nsfas excludes people on their first year or at the end of the year after second semester?
No, as long as you meet the academic eligibility requirements by passing at least 50% of your modules. However, you’ll be excluded from the funding if you fail to pass the 50% modules requirement.
Hi so my appeal has been approved but my status hasn’t changed to funded. What does appeal approved mean?
It means your appeal has been provisionally approved and waiting for final approval for funding. You Should read What Does NSFAS Appeal Approved Means? for a detailed explanation.
Hi, I was doing 2 modules on my final year and failed 1. Will NSFAS fund 1 module?
NSFAS will continue to fund you if after failing the 1 module you still passed 50% of your modules combined.
Hello the Nsfas portal states that I am funded for the current year however, my institution says I am not funded. So I am confused wether I am funded or not.
If your current status shows that you’re funded for 2022, then the NSFAS status is correct. You only have to work with the Financial Aid Office of your institution to make them understand that you’re funded.
Also, you should check if NSFAS has created a bursary for you especially when you change institutions.
I have failed three modules and I want to change college will nsfas fund me
First, changing institutions does not affect your NSFAS funding as long as the institution is a public institution.
Second, NSFAS will fund you if you pass 50% of your modules. So if you still met the academic performance requirement after failing the 3 modules, NSFAS will fund you.
I failed three modules, I am changing college meaning from level to nated.
Will nsfas fund me?
It doesn’t matter, as long as the college is a public institution, and you qualify for NSFAS, you’ll be funded.
Help , last year I applied at a TVET College for the second semester and suddenly after one week of studying my mother lost her job so I was forced to deregister at a TVET College due to financial difficulties without writing any exams/tests after a month at home I received R580 allowances from NSFAs for one month. This year I applied and got admitted at a University but my NSFAs status for 2022 is still stuck on Awaiting academic results although I did not write any tests what can I do for NSFAs to fund me this year?
The best option is to appeal to NSFAS.
I am funded by NSFAS as from 2018 and in the 2020 academic year, the second semester I was required to go out of the university to search for a Company to do experiential training before I proceed to my final year(3rd year) in 2021 and unfortunately I did not get it. Experiential training is the six months to a one-year essential module for everyone doing a Diploma in Building at Mangosuthu. At the beginning of 2021, I obtained it and I had to do it the whole year. In December 2021 I submitted and pass all required assessments, now this year I plan to do the final year of my Diploma. Now my Question is can NSFAS fund me for 2022?
Yes, you still qualify for funding for 2022
Will NSFAS Fund Me If I’m Only Left With 3 Modules And I Have Not Exceeded The N+ Rule?
As long as you meet the requirements, NSFAS will fund you.
I failed 2 modules and I passed 4 modules and I have 4 supplementary exams. already I have passed 1 supplementary and still waiting for 3 results to come.will Nsfas still fund me?
NSFAS will fund you as long as you pass at least 50% of your modules. So do the calculation is see if you reached 50% or more of your module pass.
Greetings. I was wondering since nsfas funds you even if u failed one module as long u passed with an overall of at 50%. But do you also get book allowance even with 1 module failed?
As long as you qualify for NSFAS and you’re being funded, you benefit from all the allowances there are in NSFAS. In case you’re facing any issue with your allowances, we suggest you make an inquiry from the Financial Aid office of your institution.
I failed one module. However I want to redo 2 extra modules. Will NSFAS fund the 2 extra modules?
Yes but only if you qualify for the funding.
Does nsfas consider supps as a failure? I wrote and passed them. Will nsfas fund me?
NSFAS will fund you if you meet all the requirements. And as a returning student, if you pass 50% of your modules.
Hey, if NSFAS stop funding you if you fail, are you held liable to pay for the modules you failed? Or for the entire tuition. Granted you haven’t exceeded the N+ rule.
If NSFAS stops funding you, it means you are responsible for all your fees including tuition, and any payable fees. It is only when NSFAS approves your appeal where they will start to pay your fees again.
Good morning, I was doing my last year and I failed one module second semester. So my question is if I change the module I failed to another will nsfas fund me?
First of all, changing a module does not disqualify you from NSFAS funding. However, the module you change to should be one funded by NSFAS.
Last year couldn’t meet nsfas requirements ND then it stopped paying my fees so what I should do to get nsfas pay for me again
You will have to appeal to NSFAS. You should read How To Appeal To NSFAS for the guide
Good day, I was doing my final year last year and I failed one module, will Nsfas continue to fund me for this module only?
If you failed your modules, you’ll have to appeal to NSFAS for funding.
I was doing 11 modules during my first year and failed two the other Im still waiting for supplementary results so will Nsfas continue funding me
The only time NSFAS will cancel your funding is when you fail to pass 50% of your modules. This means NSFAS will continue to fund you if after failing the 2 modules out of 11 you still met the academic performance requirements of passing at least 50% of your modules.
I was registered and couldn’t go to school due to personal reasons and during the year I got Nsfas money, now I want to go back to school and I am admitted will Nsfas fund me.
If you took a gap year, you’ll need to apply again because, once you registered, NSFAS will demand your academic records and make sure you passed at least 50% of your modules. Unfortunately, your school will not get any to give NSFAS and so, your funding will be canceled.
I was doing 10 modules then passed 4 the other 6 are suppime net so I want to know if Nsfas will wait for me to write those supp exam or they will just stop funding
NSFAS will automatically cancel your funding once you fail to pass at least 50% of your modules.
My final year was the previous year and i was admitted at the hospital mid April till August and failed to pass 50% of my modules, based on the n+1 rule will Nsfas continue to fund me fpr 2022 or i need to appeal>
Once you fail to pass 50% of your modules, you lose your funding. You can only appeal to NSFAS to fund you back. I suggest you attach probably the doctor’s report to back your claim in your letter. That will help you to convince NSFAS more.
Hi. Last year I couldn’t register a module (3rd year) that is a prerequisite for this year’s module. Now that I’m in 4th year, I’ll be doing that module I should’ve done last year. That deters me from registering for this year’s module.
That means next year I’ll only be doing that one module for the whole next year.
Will I still be eligible for funding if I’m doing only 1 module?
Yes, you only need to pass at least 50% of your modules to keep your funding.
if you fail a module twice will nsfas still fund you????
Yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you if you fail a module twice. However, NSFAS will stop funding you if you fail to pass at least 50% of your modules.
I’m repeating my third year Because I failed 2modules
Do I need to appeal to nsfas and will I loose my funding
If you failed 50% of your modules, then you need to appeal.
Hello I did 12 modules and failed five of them will nsfas fund me.
NSFAS will continue to find you if you pass at least 50% of your modules. So, if after failing 5 modules out of 12 and you still passed the 50% academic performance mark, then NSFAS will fund you.
NSFAS will continue to fund you if you pass at least 50% of your modules. So after failing 5 modules out of 12 and you still passed the 50% academic performance mark, then NSFAS will keep funding you.
I have a G17 on qualification which states that I failed two modules on my first year and still failed the same two modules on MY second year AND that means I need to appeal at my university , so will nsfas still fund me for my third year ?
Yes, you just have to appeal.
So I do not have to appeal for nsfas?
You have to appeal before you can be funded.
I was doing six modules and I passed two and have supplementary exams for four. Will nsfas still fund me?
Makew sure you were able to pass 50% of your original 6 modules in order to qualify for nsfas
I have registered for 4 module and pass two and 2 is supplementary, will nsfas fund me?
NSFAS will fund you as long as you pass at least 50% of your modules.
I passed 6 out of my 8 modules (failed 2 modules).
Failing those 2 modules my institution excluded me academically. I want to change to another institution, so will NSFAS fund me on the new university and is there anything that I can do to notice NSFAS that I’m changing to another university?
My current application of NSFAS funding it’s greyed on the provisionally funded step.
Yes, provided the new institution is a public one. To notify NSFAS of your new institution, you should make your new institution submit your academic details to NSFAS.
Will nsfas fund me I failed 4 year modules out nine
Nsfas will fund you if you pass at least 50% of your modules.
I have registered 10 modules..i have failed 4 i passed 4 and i recently have 2 supplementary exams will nsfas continue to fund me?
NSFAS will continue to fund you as long as you pass at least 50% of your modules.
I failed 5 out of 11 modules. Will nsfas still fund me? One module was extra from previous year.
If after failing the 5 out of 11 modules and you still passed 50% of your modules, NSFAS will keep funding you. But if you didn’t pass, then you’ll need to appeal to NSFAS so that they can restore your funding.
I fail one module from second year and passed my other 8 modules, but this is preventing me from registering to any of my final year modules. I can only register for the one module failed. Will NSFAS fund me for the one module?
Yes, as long as you qualify for the funding by paasing at least 50% of your modules.
Hi I’m a returning student I failed 6 of the 12 modules I was doing , will I still be funded?
If you passed 50% of your modules even after failing the 6, NSFAS will still fund you.
I couldn’t go for my final registration and I ended up not going to school due to personal reasons and Nsfas kept funding so will Nsfas fund me for the first semester?
If you still have your funding and are not canceled, then NSFAS will continue to fund you. But NSFAS does not keep funding of students who took a gap year. So, you can make inquiries from the Financial Office of the institution you intended to study. If you still have your funding active, enroll for your first semester. Otherwise, reapply for NSFAS.
I failed three modules in my first year (2019), and two modules in my last year (2021), basically I need to redo all these 5 modules. So will NSFAS cover me for these 5 modules?
It all depend on the year you’re expected to complete your qualification. In your case nsfas will fund you base on the n+1 rule. However, if you still fail your modules in 2021, you’ll lose your funding.
For my first year, I failed 3 modules (2019) and in my last year(2021) I failed 2 modules, So basically I have failed 5 modules in total that I need to redo this year 2020 first semester. WIll NSFAS continue to fund me?
Will nsfas fund me if i failed all my modules due to natural disaster and lossing all my school staff
You lose your NSFAS funding when you fail all your modules. However, you can write a strong motivational appeal letter if you can support your claim with some sort of evidence of the natural disaster. You should read this How To Write A Good NSFAS Appeal Letter For Funding
I failed 3 modules and I’m going to supplement 2 of them will nsfas still fund me.
Yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you if you passed the academic requirements. If after failing three modules and you still passed at least 50% of the total modules, you’ll keep your funding.
I was doing higher certificate course and i failed one module will nsfas continue to fund me?
Yes, NSFAS will continue to fund you if you still meet the academic performance requirements. You must pass 50% of your models in aggregate to keep your funding. So if you failed one module but still passed the academic requirement, then NSFAS will continue to fund you.
First semester I was doing 4 modules I failed 3, second semester I’m doing 1….will nsfas fund me next year when I pass?
NSFAS will find you if you pass at least 50% of your modules. So, you should consider that if you got 50% pass after failing 3 out of the 4 modules.
will NSFAS fund me if I appeal and provide proof that i failed due to a medical condition?
Yes, if you write your appeal letter and can prove it with a medical condition report, NSFAS will fund you. In fact, I think NSFAS takes health issues seriously, and hopefully, your appeal with a medical report will do much for you. However, you should write your appeal with strong wording that will call for empathy.
I recommend you read this article to write for the guide to write a good appeal letter.
