Are you struggling with the NSFAS N+ rules and do you want to understand what is NSFAS N+ rule? Do you even get the concept of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme N+ rule? Again, have you been affected by the NSFAS N+ rule?
Well, there has been a lot of confusion among students who are affected by either the NSFAS N+1 rule or the NSFAS N+2 rules.
So, in this article, we’re going to explain in detail what are NSFAS N+ rules, both the N+1 and the N+2 rules.
We’ll also answer frequently asked questions about the NSFAS N Rules. We should therefore get started with the topics.
What Is NSFAS N+ Rule?
Simply, the NSFAS N+rule means a student has a number of allocated years to complete a qualification with additional years that the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will add to fund the student in case the student could not finish the qualification in the year expected.
The N means, the minimum number of years originally allocated to the student to complete a qualification and the n+ means the additional years NSFAS will add to fund the student.
For example, if a student is registered to complete a 4-year degree program the allocated years of funding by NSFAS (N) is 4 years.
This means NSFAS is going to fund the student for 4 years as is the minimum number of years the student is expected to complete the degree qualification.
The N+ is the extra years that NSFAS is willing to add to the funding of the student in case he or she is unable to complete the qualification at the allocated number of years expected.
For example, when NSFAS applies the N+2 rule, it means it is adding additional 2 years of funding to the student who could not complete a 4-year qualification. Making the student get funded for 6 years.
This is the simple explanation and answer to what is NSFAS N+ rule.
The NSFAS N+ rule is NSFAS adding extra years of funding to a student’s minimum years of completing a qualification if the student could not finish in the allocated years of the qualification as expected.

What is NSFAS N+2 Rule
The NSFAS N+2 rule means, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will fund a student with extra 2 years if the student fails to complete a qualification according to the minimum expected years allocated for the qualification.
For an in-depth understanding, you should read NSFAS N+2 Rule for the full explanation.
However, the student must still qualify for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme before NSFAS can apply the NSFAS N+ rule.
We recommend that you read Who Qualifies For NSFAS Funding for a detailed explanation as to who can get funded by the NSFAS.
Now let’s look at some of the frequently asked questions relating to what is NSFAS N+ rule?
Can NSFAS Reject You If You’ve Exceeded N+ Rule?
Yes, you can be rejected from the NSFAS N+ rule. This is when a student has exceeded the funded years even with the extra NSFAS N+2 rules.
You should read What Does NSFAS N+ Rule Exceeded Means? for further information and explanation for you to understand why you can exceed the NSFAS N+ rule and be denied funding by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.
Is The NSFAS N+ Rule Based On the Number Of Years Funded?
No, the NSFAS N+ rule, is not based on the number of years that you have been funded as a student.
This means, that when NSFAS is applying the NSFAS N+ rule, they do not limit the rule to the year that a student started getting funded instead, they consider the year the student first registered at an institution.
For example, if you Register At UNISA in 2019 but started getting funding in 2020 and you are affected by the NSFAS N+ Rule, NSFAS will count your eligible years for funding from 2019 and not 2020 when you started receiving funding.

I made mistake its N+ rule not N+2 rule
It’s the same, use the “exceeded N+ rule enrollment” and select the reason.
Good Day
Am affected by N+2 rule is there any chance I can be funded by nsfas because the reason they listed there none falls on my reason.
The fact is, NSFAS is trying hard to prevent students who have exceeded N+ rule enrollment from appealing. So, we suggest that you select the closest reason for the appeal and hope NSFAS will consider your appeal.
Does absentism affect the funding of students??
No, but you’ll lose your funding if you take a gap year.
I did my first year in 2018 without any nsfas funding, in 2019 I was not attending school I had dropped out because of financial reasons. nsfas only started funding me in my 2nd year in 2020. so my degree is a 3 year degree but I will be done in 5 years. so because the 1st year was not funded could the N rule affect me?
Yes, the N+ rule will affect you because, when NSFAS is applying the N+ rule, it includes the year you first registered at an institution but not necessarily the year you started receiving funding.
